Medical Cannabis Legalization Bill Approved by Minnesota Senate

Minnesota’s Senate has voted 48 to 18 in favor of Senate Bill 1641, a proposal to legalize medical cannabis. The over 2/3rds vote in favor of the measure represents enough supppurplebudort to override a veto from the state’s governor, who is not in support of the move.

Under the proposed law, the possession of up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis would be legal for those who receive a recommendation from a physician, and 55 state-licensed dispensaries would be authorized to distribute the medicine to patients. Unfortunately a rather ridiculous amendment was added to the proposal which prohibits cannabis to be consumed through smoking; a person would, however, be allowed to vaporize their cannabis and put it into oil, teas, foods, etc..

The measure now heads to the state’s House; the House Health and Human Services Policy Committee approved a companion bill to Senate Bill 1641 in March, though the measure has yet to progress further.
